What to Ask When Choosing a Treatment Program

Practical guidance for families navigating substance use and recovery.

A thoughtful conversation with a provider can help you understand whether its services fit the person’s needs. Redwood does not endorse a single program or level of care for everyone.

Compare the actual care plan, not just the promise.

Before choosing a program, ask how it evaluates needs and explains its recommendations. Request clear answers about services, staff credentials, costs, family involvement, and what happens after discharge. NIAAA’s treatment navigator offers questions specifically for alcohol treatment; families can use it to understand what information a provider should be able to explain.

Practical starting points

  • What services and levels of care do you provide, and who determines fit?
  • What credentials and experience do the clinicians have?
  • How do you involve family, and what privacy limits should we understand?
  • What does a transition plan look like after this program ends?
  • What costs, insurance details, and additional fees should we expect?

A conversation example

A comparison worksheet might have columns for each provider and rows for clinical assessment, medical services, family participation, total estimated cost, and transition planning. Record what is confirmed and what still needs clarification. A warm first conversation is helpful, but it should be followed by specific information about the care being proposed.

Before your next conversation

  • Ask for an explanation of why this level of care is recommended.
  • Confirm coverage and costs directly rather than assuming insurance will pay.
  • Ask how the provider coordinates follow-up and responds if needs change.
